First off... this this tip is only useful if you aren't skilled in armor.
If you want a mage to have more boost in items don't use robes... they take up two items.
Rather get a nice shirt and pants that match with a hood, like red.
Get whatever kind of shoes you want
Now what about gloves? If you aren't skilled in armor what I did was I use wrist irons wich you can get when you do your first quest, or go to jail.
Then get your jewelery etc.
