If you get arrested with stolen goods and the guards take your loot, you can easily get it back.
Go in the door you come out and talk to the jailer (whichever one is there) and say "Visit a prisoner". He will walk to the door which is down the hall. the evidence is behind his desk.
PS: You can pick his pocket when he walks to the door.
