Take the starting pistol (M1911) to the mystery box. Then open it once you have enough points.
Once you open it, shoot 4 times in the middle of the box and then go prone and get back up. Then shoot the last 4 shots in the clip and you should get a ray gun or thunder gun.
This works 8 out of 10 times for me.
