You will occasionally find that you can no longer climb any further up a mountain as the cliff face is just to steep. Turn your back to the cliff and repeatedly press jump. If this doesnt work you may have luck facing the 'wall' at a 45 degree angle.
Usually you will 'catch' a jagged rock which you can stand on. This will open up other routes of travel so you can get past road blocks.
