Modern Warfare 3 Smashes Five Day Sales Records

The juggernaut that is Modern Warfare 3 continues to steamroll pretty much everything in its path (except maybe user reivews, but we’ll get to that) and destroy sales records in the process. Today Activision have announced that over the five day period from its release, MW3 generated over $775 million in revenue, which was $125 million more than the amount garnered by Black Ops one year ago in the same timeframe, and $225 million more than Modern Warfare 2 managed two years prior to that.

What’s important to note is that the $775 million figure not only smashes previous video game sale records, but also book and movie box office records. Pretty incredible if you think about. Other interesting facts and figures revealed were:

  • More than 7.0 million multiplayer hours were logged playing Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 by the end of launch day, a 19% increase over last year’s 5.9 million multiplayer hours logged playing Call of Duty: Black Ops last year’s launch day.
  • More than 3.3 million unique gamers played Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 in one day on November 8, up from 2.6 million unique gamers for Call of Duty: Black Ops.
  • Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 set a new record for concurrent players on Xbox Live with 3.3 million simultaneous users on November 8.

No piece of news touting the success of Modern Warfare 3 would be complete without an update on its status over at MetaCritic though (see previous updates here and here). As of today, MW3 is averaging 89 out of 100 from 69 critics and 3.2 out of 10 from 6,060 users – so it’s still mysteriously wallowing in the doldrums on that basis.
