When fighting a monster (or doing anything for experience) turning the difficulty up will raise the experience gained.
When fighting though it is better to lower the difficulty completely, get the monster down to extremely low health, then turn the difficulty up to the max, ensuring you can kill it easily in one hit, and get the experience boost.
