According to sources at IGN day one pre-orders for the hotly anticipated Call of Duty: Black Ops have exceeded those of its predecessor by a ten to one margin. Even more shocking is that the amount of pre-orders also trumped those of last year’s runaway blockbuster Modern Warfare 3.
It appears that Activision has truly taken over the gaming world – from a money making standpoint at least. Baring any anomalies, it stands to reason that Black Ops 2 will be one of the highest grossing games ever made. The game was announced in ceremonious fashion on May 1st and has been generating unparalleled amounts of hype ever since.
Although some believe that the Call of Duty formula is becoming stale and tired, the sheer number of people interested in playing prove that the simultaneously revered and scorned franchise is still running on all cylinders.
For those who haven’t seen the trailer, Black Ops 2 will take place in the not-so-distant future. A world on the brink of war, Activision is using the futuristic setting to incorporate new weapons and technology not previously seen in a Call of Duty game. Some analysts have noted that the version of our world depicted in-game is in line with what could potentially become reality. Let’s certainly hope not.
For now, let the yearly hype commence.
