You can get items for free, however you must have enough points to purchase them in the first place.

Just get the points you need, then press A to select the item you want. Then press "Yes" when asked if you want to purchase, but do not press A, instead go back to the shop menu by press B!

You'll still get the item and it won't cost you any points!
