Digital Foundry | Splinter Cell: Conviction demo analysis...

Much delayed with rumours of massive re-tooling work behind the scenes, Splinter Cell: Conviction is finally in the last furlong of development and Ubisoft released a playable demo on Xbox Live just a few days ago. Similar to BioShock and its sequel, Conviction is running using elements of Unreal Engine technology, but it's not the most recent UE3 iteration. Way back when, Ubisoft took an older version of the code and redeveloped it extensively for use in Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory. Rather than migrate to UE3 and re-engineer that, the team instead decided to build new technologies on top of its original code, resulting in the so-called LEAD engine that is the basis for Splinter Cell: Conviction. FPS and RTS game play are melded into one in the hard-hitting, hard fighting Raven Squad game that was inspired like the classic 80s action movies like Commando, Missing in Action, and Predator. You have at your disposal tons of explosions and no shortate of bad guys to take out. It's authentic 80s action. Raven Squad, developed by Atomic Motion, puts you in control of two groups of mercenaries who crash land behind enemy lines in the jungles of the Amazon. You are required to use tactical planning and a fair amount of just plain toughness to make it to safety. There are eight squad members, and each has unique skills and weapons that he'll have to use to get through the story that unfolds as part of the game. In Raven Squad, players can switch freely between real time strategy and first-person shooter action. You have to be expert at both these skills as well as switching between the two in order to make it out alive.
